Kernelization Complexity of Possible Winner and Coalitional Manipulation Problems in Voting

چکیده
In the Possible Winner problem in computational social choice theory, we are given a set of partial preferences and the question is whether a distinguished candidate could be made winner by extending the partial preferences to linear preferences. Previous work has provided, for many common voting rules, fixed parameter tractable algorithms for the Possible Winner problem, with number of candidates as the parameter. However, the corresponding kernelization question is still open and in fact, has been mentioned as a key research challenge [Bredereck et al., 2014a]. In this paper, we settle this open question for many common voting rules. We show that the Possible Winner problem for maximin, Copeland, Bucklin, ranked pairs, and a class of scoring rules that include the Borda voting rule do not admit a polynomial kernel with the number of candidates as the parameter. We show however that the Coalitional Manipulation problem which is an important special case of the Possible Winner problem does admit a polynomial kernel for maximin, Copeland, ranked pairs, and a class of scoring rules that includes the Borda voting rule, when the number of manipulators is polynomial in the number of candidates. A significant conclusion of our work is that the Possible Winner problem is harder than the Coalitional Manipulation problem since the Coalitional Manipulation problem admits a polynomial kernel whereas the Possible Winner problem does not admit a polynomial kernel.

Detecting Possible Manipulators in Elections
Manipulation is a problem of fundamental importance in the context of voting in which the voters exercise their votes strategically instead of voting honestly to prevent selection of an alternative that is less preferred. The GibbardSatterthwaite theorem shows that there is no strategy-proof voting rule that simultaneously satisfies certain combinations of desirable properties. Researchers have...
متن کاملComputational Complexity of Fundamental Problems in Social Choice Theory
Computational social choice (comsoc) theory is currently an important area of research in computer science and more specifically in AI. The field started with the pioneering work of Bartholdi et al. in 1989 where they explored the the possibility of using computational intractability as a barrier against manipulation. Following that, a vast amount of research explored computational complexity o...
متن کاملManipulation Can Be Hard in Tractable Voting Systems Even for Constant-Sized Coalitions
Voting theory has become increasingly integrated with computational social choice and multiagent systems. Computational complexity has been extensively used as a shield against manipulation of voting systems, however for several voting schemes this complexity may cause calculating the winner to be computationally difficult. Of the many voting systems that have been studied with regard to electi...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Online Manipulation of Sequential Elections
Most work on manipulation assumes that all preferences are known to the manipulators. However, in many settings elections are open and sequential, and manipulators may know the already cast votes but may not know the future votes. We introduce a framework, in which manipulators can see the past votes but not the future ones, to model online coalitional manipulation of sequential elections, and ...
متن کاملUnweighted Coalitional Manipulation under the Borda Rule Is NP-Hard
The Borda voting rule is a positional scoring rule where, for m candidates, for every vote the first candidate receives m− 1 points, the second m− 2 points and so on. A Borda winner is a candidate with highest total score. It has been a prominent open problem to determine the computational complexity of UNWEIGHTED COALITIONAL MANIPULATION UNDER BORDA: Can one add a certain number of additional ...
